The 2020 Covid pandemic stress-tested the whole fabric of our existence and the family home became the foundation of a survival strategy as social separation, isolation, and quarantine were imposed to contain the spread of the virus. The home became our only workplace, school, entertainment venue,  gymnasium, and accommodation for extended family members whose own plans had been derailed. Post pandemic, the ideal family home will stay the same as it ever was but also different. 

The size and number of rooms in the typical family home over the last fifty years are many and varied but the core has always been three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a family living room, an outdoor living area, and a garage. In the post pandemic ‘new normal’ this will remain the same. The 'new normal' will also be different providing additional options to facilitate working from home, home-schooling, multi-generational accommodation, visitor accommodation, B2B accommodation, and home entertainment. 

Our Elliot design study demonstrates how one of our popular designs for a typical 15 metre wide lot can be both the same and different. The three bedrooms, two bathrooms, family living room, outdoor living, and double garage will still be there and we have designed the space adjacent to the entry to provide the ‘different’ lifestyle options that will persist in the new normal.

One design space and cost footprint provide either additional bedrooms, home office, additional living space, home entertainment space, or an integrated secondary dwelling.
